5-Day Bale Mountains Trek

$800.00

Overview

The Bale Mountains National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most dramatic high-altitude landscapes — Afro-alpine plateaux, glacial lakes, giant lobelias, and the chance to see the rare Ethiopian wolf. This 5-day trek combines high-plateau walking on the Sanetti Plateau (including the Tullu Deemtu area), overnight camping or simple lodges, a visit to the Harenna Forests, and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Expect cold mornings at altitude, excellent stargazing, and big open vistas.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Addis Ababa → Goba → Dinsho (Bale NP HQ)
• Morning: depart Addis (road transfer ~6–8 hrs depending on stops).
• Afternoon: arrive Dinsho (park HQ), check in, park briefing and short acclimatisation walk around the HQ (possible sightings of mountain nyala / bushbuck near Dinsho).
• Overnight: Dinsho guesthouse or basic camp at park HQ.

Day 2 — Dinsho → Drive up to Garba Guracha / Finchi Habera → Trek to Sanetti Plateau (camp)
• Early drive to the trailhead and begin trek across moorland to the Sanetti Plateau (Finchi Habera area).
• Afternoon: explore the afro-alpine moor, look for Ethiopian wolf activity at dusk.
• Overnight: campsite on/near Sanetti Plateau (or very basic mountain hut if available).

Day 3 — Tullu Deemtu (summit day) & Sanetti plateau
• Early trek to Tullu Deemtu (the second-highest peak in the Bale range; long but rewarding day — steep sections). Enjoy panoramic views and alpine lakes.
• Return to camp on the plateau; optional short evening wildlife/photography outing.

Day 4 — Sanetti Plateau → Harenna Forest (descending landscape change)
• Trek/drive from the plateau down the escarpment into the Harenna Forest (dramatic habitat shift: afro-alpine → montane cloud forest).
• Afternoon forest walk, birds, endemic plants, waterfalls; stay at Bale Mountain Lodge or a forest lodge / camp.

Day 5 — Harenna → Goba → Return to Addis (or domestic flight option)
• Morning walk (early birding option), then transfer to Goba and drive back to Addis. Alternatively, arrange a regional flight from a nearby airstrip if available (depends on season/schedule). Tour ends on arrival in Addis.

Difficulty & practical notes

  • Fitness: Moderate to fit — daily walks 4–7 hours on rough/rocky ground and at high altitude (3,500–4,300 m on the plateau).

  • Altitude: Sanetti Plateau and Tullu Deemtu are high — allow time to acclimatize, drink water, avoid heavy exertion day 1.

  • Best time to go: Dry months are generally best for trekking/observations. (Operators commonly run trips year-round with seasonal preferences.)

  • Wildlife: Highest chance to see Ethiopian wolf on Webb & Sanetti plateaux; also mountain nyala, hyrax, Bale monkey (in forest) and many highland birds.

Price (per person, sample packages)

I’ve given two common price tiers used by operators — Budget (camping/basic lodges) and Comfort (lodge + private vehicle, higher service level). These are based on current market offerings from local operators and booking platforms (examples shown in source listings). Final price depends on group size, season, accommodation choice and transport.

A. Budget (camping / shared vehicle & guide)

  • USD: ~USD 800/ person (based on shared 3–5 pax departures).

B. Comfort (private vehicle, private guide, stays at Bale Mountain Lodge or similar)

  • USD: ~USD 1000 – 1320 / person (double occupancy). This includes better lodge accommodation, private transfers and full support.

Note: some operators quote slightly higher multi-day expedition prices (especially photographic small-group departures). I cited representative listings to give realistic ranges.
